Investocraft is an annual event organized by MBA - Capital Markets which is a unique initiative between SVKM's NMIMS University and the Bombay Stock Exchange which attempts to catch the pulse of the Indian bourses every year. This year's theme for the event is "U-Turn on D-Street" where market veterans will deliberate as to when the bear hug will be broken and the tide will turn in favour of the bulls.
Not many veterans of the Dalal Street in their wildest dreams would have predicted the Indian Indices to plunge to the current level. In the past two years, global financial markets have seen the turmoil, the enormity of which seconds only to the 1930’s crisis. What started with few defaults in the US mortgage market metamorphosed into the subprime crisis then snowballing into a liquidity crunch worldwide and has now taken a form of the catastrophe which has the clout to bring down the whole system.
The tremors of what is happening in the developed markets have been felt in our domestic market as well. The proponents of the then famous decoupling theory have no place to hide as the theory has turned on its head. The much talked FII’s who had made it possible for SENSEX to reach the highs of 20000+ a year ago, are now instrumental in taking it down to the sub 9000 levels. Liquidity crunch is also crippling the efforts of domestic FI's to sustain the market.
How long will the pain last? and what will be the state of economy once it is over? Is the repercussion of the global market the only reason for the fall? Or are there some other intrinsic reasons as well? Is the much talked Indian growth story still intact? Or was it just hype? In the market which is falling like it has no bottom what’s in it for the investor, especially for the retail investor? Which are the sectors one needs to target in a scenario like this and what are the sectors one needs to avoid? These are few questions which we seek answers for. In the backdrop of these events we chose our theme to be “U Turn on Dalal Street” where the industry stalwarts can share their insights and show us the future course of action.
